English Department – Long Term Overview
Statement of Intent:
Our curriculum endeavors to provide our students with a broad knowledge base of English Literature and Language. Topics and texts are taught over three terms to allow for literary, language and contextual knowledge to build alongside a skill base allowing students to make the most progress. We want our students to continue to develop a love of learning of English.
In KS3 we aim to develop pupils love of Language and Literature and take creative approaches towards developing their enthusiasm and engagement, as well as developing the analysis skills and techniques to enter KS4 with confidence. We study Shakespeare texts in all years, however we assess using drama and performance skills in these SOW in Year 7,8, 9.. We ensure that we teach skills and techniques throughout year 7, 8 and 9 that build, and scaffold skills needed in Year 10 and 11. In Year 9 we begin to develop pupils’ awareness of exam- based skills in preparation for Year 10. In the final term of Year 9 we introduce a GCSE Literature Text and Language Paper 1 skills.
In KS4, Year 10 we focus on GCSE Literature texts and language analysis skills whilst also developing skills for both Language Paper 1 and Paper 2. These skills are recapped and revised and exam techniques are developed and practiced over the course of Year 11 in preparation for final GCSE exams.
The topic areas are designed in a way that allow students to transfer key knowledge to their long- term memory and apply them fluently. We want them to use these topic areas as a base to promote curiosity and a knowledge of the world around them.
