The Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) development of students at Iqra Academy
We firmly believe the mission and ethos of the Trust.
“At Learning without Limits Academy Trust we will work together for our schools to be outstanding and for all our learners to grow, aim high and thrive in their ambitions. Our learners will be confident members of our community whose voices are heard and who are prepared and able to tackle the barriers that may limit them in fulfilling their ambitions.
The environment we create will be one which is inspiring, supportive and inclusive. We will build resilient learners with the skills to be responsible citizens, and in doing so transform life chances in a way which supports positive outcomes for our communities and our city.”
At IQRA our values and ethos can be clearly seen in the student respect campaign which we expect all students to ascribe to and which is endorsed and supported by the student leadership and school council:

As a school we have a duty to ensure that students leave Iqra Academy as responsible citizens. We have a statutory duty to ensure that students understand the British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs and this is something we feel very strongly about as we are such a multi-cultural school on the outskirts of a very multi-cultural city. We are committed to ensuring that students understand and respect the ever-changing multi-cultural and multi-faith nature of the community of Great Britain. As a faith school with an Islamic ethos we emphasise the importance of these values being the essence of Islamic foundations of faith so they have a two fold basis in the lives of pupils
We educate our students on the key British values in a wide-range of different ways, some of these are listed below
Democracy
The rule of law
Individual liberty
Mutual respect
Tolerance of those of different faiths and beliefs
We support the spiritual development of our students to enable them to develop their:
- ability to be reflective about their own beliefs, religious or otherwise, that inform their perspective on life and their interest in and respect for different people’s faiths, feelings and values
- sense of enjoyment and fascination in learning about themselves, others and the world around them
- use of imagination and creativity in their learning
- willingness to reflect on their experiences.
We support the moral development of our students to enable them to develop their:
- ability to recognise the difference between right and wrong and to readily apply this understanding in their own lives, recognise legal boundaries and, in so doing, respect the civil and criminal law of England
- understanding of the consequences of their behaviour and actions
- interest in investigating and offering reasoned views about moral and ethical issues and ability to understand and appreciate the viewpoints of others on these issues.
We support the social development of our students to enable them to develop their:
- use of a range of social skills in different contexts, for example working and socialising with other pupils, including those from different religious, ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds
- willingness to participate in a variety of communities and social settings, including by volunteering, cooperating well with others and being able to resolve conflicts effectively
- acceptance and engagement with the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs; they develop and demonstrate skills and attitudes that will allow them to participate fully in and contribute positively to life in modern Britain.
We support the cultural development of our students to enable them to develop their:
- understanding and appreciation of the wide range of cultural influences that have shaped their own heritage and those of others
- understanding and appreciation of the range of different cultures within school and further afield as an essential element of their preparation for life in modern Britain
- knowledge of Britain’s democratic parliamentary system and its central role in shaping our history and values, and in continuing to develop Britain
- willingness to participate in and respond positively to artistic, musical, sporting and cultural opportunities
- interest in exploring, improving understanding of and showing respect for different faiths and cultural diversity and the extent to which they understand, accept, respect and celebrate diversity, as shown by their tolerance and attitudes towards different religious, ethnic and socio-economic groups in the local, national and global communities.
- Challenge specific issues surrounding our diverse community including forced marriage, FGM, Islamaphobia and Homophobia
At Iqra we strongly support the PSHE Association belief that: ‘PSHE education is the school subject which prepares them for life and work in this changing world, helping to keep pupils safe, healthy and boosting their life chances.’ A curriculum for life.
All students at Iqra receive one lesson of specialist PSHE teaching in one week. Teachers have become specialists in the areas they teach and students gain knowledge and develop real skills in areas such as how to protect themselves both online and offline, how to look after their physical and mental health, Forced Marriages, Preventing extremism how to form appropriate relationships and in many other topics linked to SMSC.
We continue to work hard to support the personal development of every child at Iqra to ensure that we make a profound positive difference to all students during their time with us.
‘There is huge demand for this kind of holistic, ‘curriculum for life’ from pupils, parents and business leaders and strong evidence that it boosts attainment and life chances, particularly amongst disadvantaged pupils.’ PSHE Association
